Small Freezer Dimensions: Sizes, Capacity & Space Needed - ANTARCTIC-STAR

Your refrigerator’s freezer is full, but there is only a narrow corner left for extra storage. A compact freezer may look like the answer—until you realize the lid cannot open beneath a shelf or the door blocks your walkway.

Checking small freezer dimensions before you buy helps you avoid those surprises. This guide compares chest and upright designs, explains what 3.5 cubic feet means, and shows you how to measure for both the appliance and everyday access.

Small Freezer Sizes and Dimensions at a Glance

There is no single standard size for a small freezer. The two Antarctic Star examples below show how capacity and exterior measurements differ.

Freezer Capacity Width × Depth × Height (W × D × H), inches Width × Depth × Height (W × D × H), cm Opening space to check
Antarctic Star 1.1 cu. ft. compact upright freezer 1.1 cu. ft. ≈ 31 L 18 × 18 × 18.5 45.7 × 45.7 × 47.0 Space in front and around the hinge for the door
Antarctic Star D5897H chest freezer 3.5 cu. ft. ≈ 99 L 21.18 × 21.77 × 30.94 53.8 × 55.3 × 78.6 Space above and behind the lid for opening

These are specific model examples, not standard dimensions for every freezer of the same capacity. Measurements are the listed appliance dimensions; they do not include installation clearances or packaging. Metric conversions are rounded.

When comparing small deep freezer dimensions, check whether the model opens from the top or the front.

Chest vs. Upright: Which Fits Your Space?

The opening direction matters as much as the closed appliance dimensions. Compare the exact models you are considering rather than assuming every upright freezer has a smaller footprint.

Space consideration Chest freezer Upright freezer
Access Lid opens upward; check overhead obstructions Door opens outward; check walls, cabinets and walkways
Storage layout Open compartment, sometimes with removable baskets Shelves or drawers, depending on the model
Everyday use Consider whether you can comfortably reach items at the bottom Consider door access and room to remove shelves or drawers

Small Chest Freezer Dimensions

Check the closed width, depth and height, then the lid’s opening path. A spot beneath a low shelf may accommodate the cabinet but prevent you from opening or loading the freezer properly.

Small Upright Freezer Dimensions

Check the door swing and any opening angle needed to remove storage components. A reversible door can offer placement flexibility on models that support it, but it does not remove the need for clearance.

How Big Is a 3.5 Cubic Foot Freezer?

A 3.5 cubic foot freezer has a stated storage capacity of approximately 99 liters. Its exterior size depends on the model. Our D5897H chest freezer measures 21.18 inches wide, 21.77 inches deep and 30.94 inches high.

Its closed cabinet occupies about 3.2 square feet of floor area, calculated from width × depth. The usable installation space must be larger to accommodate the model’s required ventilation and lid movement.

For a quick placement check, mark the cabinet’s width and depth on your floor with removable tape. Then check the surrounding clearance and overhead space separately. This shows the footprint without treating it as the complete installation area.

How to Measure Your Space for a Small Freezer

Measure the installation spot and the route into your home before ordering. Use the selected model’s manual for ventilation, placement and operating conditions.

  1. Measure width, depth and height. Record the narrowest usable space, including nearby trim, shelves and other obstructions.
  2. Allow for ventilation. Add the clearances specified for that model. Do not apply one generic gap to every freezer or block its ventilation openings.
  3. Check the opening path. Leave room for a chest lid to rise or an upright door to swing, and for you to load and unload food.
  4. Check the delivery route. Measure doorways, hallways, stairs and tight turns. If the freezer will remain boxed during delivery, check the packaged dimensions too.
  5. Confirm the location is suitable. Check the permitted ambient temperature range and installation type. Fitting beneath a counter does not automatically make a freestanding freezer suitable for an enclosed cabinet.

Keep enough access for the maintenance described in the manual, such as defrosting and draining on models that require it.

Not sure whether your measurements allow enough room? Contact our Antarctic Star support team with the model you are considering, your available width, depth and height, and any nearby shelves or walls. We can help you check the model’s dimensions and placement requirements before you buy.

Choosing a Small Chest Freezer Size or Upright Capacity

Choose capacity around your shopping and storage habits. A freezer used for a few overflow items has different demands from one holding several weeks of meals.

  • List the foods you regularly freeze, including their packaging.
  • Check whether bulky items fit the interior, not just the advertised capacity.
  • Consider space taken by baskets, shelves and gaps between packages.
  • Leave items accessible so everyday use does not require emptying the freezer.

Food weight is not a reliable universal measure of freezer capacity: bread, meat and boxed meals occupy space differently.

Find a Freezer That Fits Your Home

If you prefer top access and a removable basket, consider our 3.5 cu. ft. chest freezer. If front access and shelf storage better suit your routine, compare our 1.1 cu. ft. upright model. Use the dimensions above and your measurements to decide which fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Size of a Small Freezer?

There is no universal external size. Mini freezer dimensions and larger compact models vary by capacity and design. Compare the exact model’s width, depth and height, plus its required installation and opening clearances.

How Much Can You Fit in a 3.5 Cubic Foot Freezer?

The amount of food you can store depends on package shapes, the interior layout and how you arrange items. There is no fixed food weight or package count that applies to every 3.5 cubic foot freezer.

How Much Will a 5 Cu. Ft. Freezer Hold?

A 5 cu. ft. freezer has approximately 142 liters of stated capacity—about 43% more volume than 3.5 cu. ft. That does not guarantee 43% more packages will fit; usable storage also depends on layout and packaging.

How Much Clearance Does a Small Freezer Need?

Use the side, rear and other clearances specified in the selected model’s manual. Check door or lid clearance separately; there is no single installation gap that applies to every model.

Can a Small Freezer Fit Under a Counter?

Only when the model’s installation requirements allow it and the space provides the required ventilation and access. Do not treat a freestanding freezer as a built-in appliance simply because its cabinet fits beneath the counter.
